Partimento with Imitation: How a Bass Becomes Architecture

A practical doorway into living Baroque counterpoint.

What is a partimento with imitation? It is a bass that invites another voice to answer, echo, and build. For true Musici Prattici, counterpoint, cadence, diminution, canon, and voice leading become one craft.

The First Stone: Finding the Subject

A good realization begins by seeing where the bass already asks for imitation.

Read the sign of the answer

What does responsio mean in a partimento? It means answer. When the bass shows a subject, the upper voice may answer at the octave, creating imitation, structure, direction, and contrapuntal clarity.

Measure the distance

How do you choose the interval of imitation? You test the octave, the fifth, or the twelfth against the bass. The right answer preserves consonance, avoids weak octaves, and keeps the phrase moving forward.

Keep the phrase alive

Why avoid a closed octave too early? Because it may sound finished before the music has spoken. A third, sixth, cadential goal, melodic curve, and imperfect consonance keep the musical wall still rising.

The Workshop: Turning Figures into Music

The numbers are not decoration. They are doors.

Let the figures reveal the plan

How do figures like 6 5 4 3 help a composer? They reveal motion, suspension, resolution, harmony, and voice leading. The skilled hand does not merely fill chords. It discovers a hidden melodic design.

Repair the rhythm with diminution

What happens when a bar becomes too slow? Add diminution. Faster notes, clear targets, balanced figuration, and controlled rhythm restore life. The craft is simple, start from one note and aim toward the next.

Repeat, but never mechanically

How can repetition remain fresh? Keep a familiar cadential ending, then alter the register, rhythm, sequence, figuration, or direction. Baroque music loves memory, but it also loves invention.

The Contrapuntal Blueprint: Imitation, Canon, and Contrary Motion

Now the realization becomes a small building of voices.

Build small canons

What is a small canon inside a partimento? It is a brief imitation where one voice follows another after a fixed delay. This creates order, motion, dialogue, sequence, and real Baroque workmanship.

Use the bass as a guide

How do you know where the music is going? Follow the bass. It may point to G major, A minor, D minor, or back to C major. Each tonal door needs a clear cadence, preparation, and arrival.

Turn the subject upside down

What is contrary motion imitation? It means one voice ascends while the other descends. This gives variety, avoids stiffness, sharpens counterpoint, strengthens invertible writing, and crowns the final section with surprise.

The Final Craft: From Exercise to Composition

A partimento is not a puzzle. It is a school of invention.

Think in structural notes

How should you write diminutions? First choose the starting note, the target note, the interval, the consonance, and the arrival. Then fill the space. Ornament is safe only when the pillars are strong.

Use sequences like staircases

Why do sequences work so well? They carry the ear through repeated patterns, thirds, sixths, suspensions, and cadences. A good sequence is not a copy machine. It is a staircase toward a new room.

Let the reprise transform the beginning

How can the end recall the beginning? Bring back the first subject, then change it with contrary motion, new register, new rhythm, cadential pressure, and spicy dissonance. The listener hears memory and surprise together.
